Hemlock Named Most Environmentally Progressive Printer in Canada for Fifth Consecutive Year

Hemlock Printers Ltd. (Burnaby) was once again honoured for its commitment to the environment at the 5th Annual Environmental Printing Awards, held April 8th, 2010 in Toronto, Ontario. Hemlock received its 5th consecutive Gold Award in the category of Most Environmentally Progressive Printer in  Canada, 100-500 employees. Hemlock also received a Bronze Award for Most Environmentally Progressive Print Project, Offset for the Hollyhock Foundation 2010 Calendar. Richard Kouwenhoven, Hemlock’s Vice President Client Services, was present at the awards ceremony to accept this prestigious honour. The event, hosted by PrintAction Magazine, and attended by over 350 paper and printing executives, recognizes excellence in environmental stewardship within the printing industry across Canada.

Highlights of Hemlock’s 2009 environmental and social achievements include: 

• Achieving Carbon Neutrality in its operations, the first printing company in Canada to achieve this distinction
• Launching Zero, a Carbon Neutral Printing Program with over 60 participating projects in its first 4 months, affecting over 1,000,000 printed pieces and generating 134.4 metric tons of carbon offsets
• Continued progress promoting FSC® grades to our clients which now represent over 70% of our total annual paper purchases
• Continued progress in landfill bound waste reduction now totaling 90% since 2006
• 156,000 printed pieces printed for 12 different charitable organizations under our highly successful Off Cuts for Charity program
• Raising over $15,000 in support of local charities, and $11,000 in support of the people of Haiti in response to the devastating Earthquake
